For Kelly's birthday on July 10, 1999, David bought her the equipment necessary to make homebrewed beer.  Turns out the equipment sat idle for some time (OK, bad call on the present!), but we finally got around to trying it out recently (8-21-01).

We had a lot of fun with two friends cooking the wort and setting up the primary fermenter shown in the video.  Mark is another doctoral student who shares office space with David.  Debra works at the Casey Foundation with Kelly.

Fortunately, Mark had experience brewing in his dorm room as an undergraduate.  Actually, he is known as the "Beerlady" (long story). Someday soon he hopes to post his brewing articles to www.beerlady.com -- the link will be active only after he puts up the site.  Read them for a good laugh and an explanation of the home brewing process.  Here is a picture of the four of us around the wort.

January 2001 -- Here are more pictures from our homebrewing adventures...  So far, we have made a Nutbrown Ale, German Oktoberfest, Cranberry Ale, and have an American Cream Ale in the primary fermenter.  We give most of it away, since we really don't drink very much beer ourselves.  The Cream Ale will be for a Young Adult group gathering we are starting with some friends at our church, St. Casimir's.  We had a bowling party with the Nutbrown Ale, and gave away most of the Cranberry Ale for Christmas.
